Wild Paths FRIDAY - Yaya Bey

RSF have teamed up with the amazing Wild Paths crew for a Friday night takeover on our Big Top Stage. They are bringing us a taste of the incredible and eclectic artists and bands they work with - Get ready!

Yaya Bey’s music is rooted in something far gutsier than just smoky vocals. The Queens-born singer takes inspiration from black feminist theory, with her last album, The Many Alter-Egos of Trill’eta Brown, drawing on the writings of Audre Lorde.

She often blends the personal (bad breakups) and the political (black liberation) with poetic wordplay. She’s been a songwriter since age nine, first crafting hooks for her father — an MC who’d seen moderate success in the Nineties — in their Queens, New York, home.

Now based in Brooklyn, Yaya Bey began working with the producer Chucky Thompson (whose resume includes classics by the Notorious B.I.G., Mary J. Blige, and Faith Evans) and writing reference tracks for another singer.

Yaya Bey’s music is sensitive and bare.
